Haskell Small

Hailed by England's Musical Times for his "dazzlingly prodigious technique,” the brilliant, provocative American pianist/composer, Haskell Small, has concertized with great success in major European capitals, South America, Japan and China, and has been enthusiastically received by American audiences at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, the National Gallery and the Spoleto Festival. Mr. Small was featured in the PBS television special A Celebration of the Piano, taped at Wolf Trap, and he has toured extensively as the recipient of a solo recitalist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His CD Gershwin in Black and White caused The Washington Post to note, “Who could ask for anything more?”

A student of Leon Fleischer and William Masselos, Mr. Small was a top prize-winner at the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition.

As a composer, he has received commissions from the Washington Performing Arts Society, the Three Rivers Piano Competition, the Paul Hill Chorale and the Amadeus Orchestra. A recent ballet score, Subterranean, commissioned by the Washington Ballet, depicts the interaction of eight characters waiting for a subway. As an audience member said, “If that's what goes on in the subway, I'm heading down there tomorrow.”
